The smart home move-in checklist
Moving into a house with smart devices already in it? Reset, re-pair and lock things down in an afternoon, in this order.
A house that comes with smart locks, cameras and a thermostat is a gift, as long as the last owner can’t still open the door. Work through this list in order on your first day.
1. Take back the doors
- Change every keypad and smart lock code, and delete any codes you didn’t create.
- Ask the seller to remove the locks from their app. If they can’t, factory reset each lock and set it up again.
- Reset the garage door opener and clear its paired remotes.
- Rekey or replace physical locks if you weren’t given every key.
2. Take back the network
- Change the Wi-Fi name and password, or bring your own router.
- Change the router’s admin password and update its software.
- Put cameras and smart plugs on a separate guest or device network if your router supports one.
3. Reset and re-pair devices
- Factory reset cameras and doorbells, then set them up under your own account.
- Reset the thermostat’s account link and set your own schedule.
- Reset smart switches, plugs and hubs that belonged to the old owner.
- Write down each device’s brand, model and where it is. You’ll want the list later.
4. Bring it together
- Pick one place to run everything, so you aren’t juggling six apps.
- Add each device there and give it a plain name, like “Front door” or “Kitchen lights”.
- Set up notifications for the few things that matter: doors, leaks, smoke and carbon monoxide.
5. Check the safety basics
- Test every smoke and carbon monoxide alarm, and note their install dates.
- Find the water shut-off and the electrical panel, and label them.
- Replace batteries in locks, sensors and alarms.
PorchIQ can do step 4 for you: it finds what’s on your network, helps you add it, and gives everything one app. See Getting started when you’re ready.
